ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed of alkylating substi- tuted hydroxybenzenes, particularly substituted hydroxy- benzaldehydes, by reacting the hydroxybenzene compound with a dialkyl sulfate in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate, substantially in the absence of a solvent. The alkoxylated product is obtained in yields substan- tially close to theoretical.
