ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the microbiological modification of a hardwood by the action of a microorganism selected from the group consisting of: an aerobic microorganism, an enzymatically active preparation thereof and mixtures thereof, the process comprising: implanting the hardwood with the microorganism; controlling the temperature, relative moisture content, O2 content and CO2 cont- ent of the hardwood in accordance with the microorganism; and terminating the process after a time. The process is more rapid, economically viable and industrially acceptable on a large scale than known prior art processes.
