ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention is concerned with the modification of starch by silanes. The modification takes place with concurrent use of organic solvents in a way that the starch is brought into intimate contact with the silanes in the presence of metal acid esters of metals of the 4th or 5th sub-groups of the Periodic System of the Elements. It is appropriate if the silane and the metal acid ester is dissolved in organic solvent and the starch is introduced into this solution. After a sufficiently long reaction time, the starch is separated off and then shows better processing properties than correspondingly unmodified starch. With the metal acid esters, the alkoxy groups can also be replaced by complex formers; suitable as silanes are both alkylalkoxy- silanes and also organofunctional silanes. The modified starches produces according to the process of the invention may be used as binder for mineral fibres, as textile auxiliary, as sizing agent for different paper purposes as well as filler for plastics.
