Abstract of the disclosure A new process for the optical resolution of racemic mixtures of ?-naphthylpropionic acids of formula Image I d,l wherein R1 is (C1-6) alkyl and R2 represents hydrogen or a halogen atom. This process comprises reacting a racemic mix- ture of a compound of formula II Image II d,1 wherein R1 and R2 have the above seen meanings and R3 is a reactive group, with an optically active aminoacid of formula III Image d or l wherein R4 represents a (C1-8) alkyl, optionally sub- stituted by a carboxy group, phenyl, substituted phenyl, benzyl, substituted benzyl and m is an integer from 0 to 4, to give a pair of diastereoisomeric amides of formula Image IV [d,d + l,d] or [d,l + l,l] wherein R1, R2, R4 and m have the above seen meanings, and M represents a hydrogen atom or a cation of an alkali metal or a cation of an organic base which is re- solved into the single diastereoisomeric amides of for- mula Image V d,d or l,d or d,1 or l,l By means of a subsequent acid hydrolysis, the compounds of formula V give the optically active .alpha.-naphthylpropionic acids of formula Image VI wherein R1 and R2 have the above seen meanings.
