Abstract Vinyl monomers, for example methyl methacrylate are partially polymerised by means of a percarbonic acid ester, preferably in the absence of regulators, and polymerisation is terminated by the addition of a thioether, organic disulphide or mercaptan acting as polymerisation inhibitor. The polymerisation is preferably terminated when at least 20% by weight of the vinyl monomer(s) has been polymerised. The polymerisation is preferably effected at least in part at a temperature of 80 to 100°C, and the earlier temperature may be maintained within this range by the addition of cold water.
