ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The present invention relates to a process for the polymerization of alpha-olefins by means of a catalytic system constituted by a) a compound selected from alkyl halides, alkyl- derivatives or hydrides of metals belonging to the first three groups of the Periodic System and b) the combination product of a chloride of a transition metal selected among Mn, Co, V and Fe, with titanium trichloride, which combination product is fi- nely dispersed on a carrier selected from the halides of metals belonging to the 1st and 2nd groups of the Periodic System. The weight ration between components a) and b) is in the range of from 4 to 120. The invention also relates to the catalytic system as such and to a method for preparing this catalytic system.
