Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to an improved process for the production of polychloroprene latices by polymerisation to high conversion levels, generally in excess of 50%. Chloroprene, which may contain up to 50% by weight of a copolymerisable monomer, is polymerized in aqueous alkaline emulsion. The emulsion contains from 0.1 to 2% by weight, based on the quantity of monomers, of a primary or secondary hydroxyalkylamine in which the OH-group is separated from the amino nitrogen atom by at least two carbon atoms. The latex forms films characterized by outstanding tensile strength, even when the polymeriza- tion is carried to high conversions.
