ABSTRACT Disclosed is a process for the preparation of l-amino-4-bromoanthraquinones by the bromination of the corresponding 1-aminoanthraquinone wherein a l-amino- anthraquinone is contacted with elemental bromine in the presence of a carboxylic acid solvent and added hydro- bromic acid. The process is not as complicated as known processes and produces lower amounts of the isomeric l-amino-2-bromoanthraquinones.
