ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of a 1-hydroxymethylpyrazole comprising combining an methylpyrazole with water and an aqueous formaldehyde solution to form a 1-hydroxymethylpyrazole in a mother liquor, filtering said 1-hydroxymethylpyrazole from said mother liquor, and combining said mother liquor with a second aqueous formaldehyde solution and methylpyrazole.
