23221-4407 Abstract of the disclosure 2,2-Bisphenylhexafluoropropane is prepared by oxidation of 2,2-bis-(4-methylphenyl)-hexafluoropropane to 2,2-bis-(4- carboxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane and decarboxylation of the 2,2- bis(4-carboxyphenyl)-hexafluoropropane. The oxidation is preferably carried out with chromium trioxide, whereas the decarboxylation is carried out by heating the product of oxidation at temperatures above about 200°C in the presence of an organic nitrogen hase of low volatility, preferably in the presence of a copper catalyst. The product of the process if mainly useful as an intermediate in the polymer synthesis.
