A B S T R A C T 2,3-Dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxybenzofuran, a compound useful inter alia for the preparation of the known insecticide Carbofuran (i.e. 2,3-dihydro-2,2- dimethylbenzofuranyl N-methylcarbamate) is prepared by heating ortho-methallyloxyphenol or ortho-methallyl- pyrocatechol in the presence of - as catalyst - an aluminium derivative.
