ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the preparation of 2- substituted 5-nitroso-4,6-diaminopyrimidines. Malonic dini- trile and an amidine are nitrosated in water or alcohol, in an acidic medium, and in the presence of a nitrite salt, to form the corresponding amidine salt of isonitrosomalononi- trile. The latter is converted to the desired end product by heat treatment in a basic medium, in the presence of dimethylformamide or of a pyridine base, and after removal of the water or alcohol.
