ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-(4- methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl) butyraldehyde by hydroformylation of limonene in the presence of a catalyst containing a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, wherein the improvement consists in using as catalyst a rhodium car- bonyl complex containing additionally a triphenyl and/or trialkyl phosphine as ligands and conducting the reaction at a pressure of 100 to 350 bars and at a temperature of 110 to 160°C, the triphenyl or trialkyl phosphines or mixture thereof being present in an amount of 10 to 50 moles per gram atom of rhodium in the reaction mixture.
