2065293 9103462 PCTABS00003 The invention concerns a method of preparing high-purity 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulphone in high yields by reacting phenol with a sulphonating agent in a chorinated aromatic compound. The phenol is reacted with the sulphonating agent in ortho-, meta- or para-chlorotoluene, or any mixture of these isomeric chlorotoluenes, as inert solvent at temperatures of about 100 to about 200 ·C.
