4-Bromomethylbiphenyl compounds which are substituted in the 2'-position by cyano, carboxyl, alkoxycarbonyl of 2 to 5 carbon atoms, aminocarbonyl or optionally substituted tetrazolyl can easily be prepared in high purity and yield by reacting the corresponding 4-methylbiphenyl compound with elemental bromine in a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon in the absence of N-bromosuccinimide.
