ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE It is known to prepare 1,2-dihydroxycyclobutenedione-(3,4) (squaric acid) from a series of sequential reactions. Such known methods have a relatively low yield and generate unusable by-products. The present invention overcomes these drawbacks of the prior art by providing a process for the production of squaric acid wherein hexachlorocyclobutene is heated with sulphuric acid of from 70 to 96% by weight strength at a temperature of from 80° to 150°C.
