T 5041 ABSTRACT PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF A BASIC SALT, SALT THUS PREPARED AND LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING SUCH A SALT Process for the preparation of a basic alkaline earth metal salt of an organic carboxylic acid, which comprises (a) preparing a mixture of one equivalent of the organic carboxylic acid and at least one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal hydroxide and/or oxide in a hydrocarbon solvent and, optionally a C1-6 alcohol and/or water; (b) introducing carbon dioxide into the mixture in an amount of at least 0.1 eq carbon dioxide per equivalent alkaline earth metal at a temperature in the range from 75 to 150°C; and (c) removing residual solids, if any, and the water layer obtained. Such a salt has dispersant properties and is suitable for use in lubricating oil and fuel compositions. PS05004
