A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of a catalyst for carrying out the water gas shift reaction, containing alumina and at least one transition metal and preferably also an alkali metal. A thermally decomposable aluminum compound is melted, the metal or metals is/are dissolved in the melt in elemental form or as compound(s), the aluminium compound is decomposed by heating and subsequently the mixture is cooled and shaped into a form which is suitable for catalysis. The catalyst is used in the preparation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide from steam and carbon monoxide.
