A B S T R A C T Process for the preparation of a cross-linked nickel and/or cobalt synthetic mica-montmorillonite (Ni-SMM) catalyst by heat- ing, at least temporarily at subatmospheric pressure, of the product obtained from mixing Ni-SMM with polymeric hydroxy aluminium compounds. Such a (preferably Pd-loaded) catalyst can be used in a process for the hydroismerization of C4-C7 paraffins.
