ABSTRACT The present invention provides an anhydrous acylation process for the preparation of antibiotic, cefepime dihydrochloride hydrate which is substantially free of the anti-isomer and the .DELTA.2 isomer comprising the N-acylation of a silylated derivative of 7-amino-3-[(1-methyl-1-pyrrolidinio)- methyl]ceph-3-em-4-carboxylate with the syn-isomer of 2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyimino acetyl chloride hydrochloride.
