ABSTRACT Process for the preparation of a panchromatically-sensitive zinc oxide wherein finely divided zinc oxide is reacted with ammonia gas and carbon dioxide gas, and the reaction product is heated at a temperature between 190° and 350°C to constant weight, characterized in that during the reaction with ammonia and carbon dioxide the zinc oxide particles are kept in motion, and that the reaction is finished when the sensitivity of the zinc oxide to moisture still is so low that, upon charging to the maximum potential, a photoconductive layer, applied to a conductive support and manufactured in the ratio 7 : 1 with the panchromatic zinc oxide and a binder that is not sensitive to moisture, needs at least 25 seconds in air with a temperature of 40°C and a dew point of 28°C to drop this potential to half in the dark.
