- 1 - Abstract of the disclosure: An aqueous polymer dispersion is prepared by poly- merizing at least two different olefinically unsaturated monomers in an aqueous medium at 3 temperature of 30 to 100°C and in the presence of a polymerization initiator which forms free radicals, an emulsifier, a protective colloid and, if appropriate, a chain regulator. If car- boxymethylcellulose having a specific degree of substi- tution is used as the protective colloid, a dispersion which is particularly suitable as a binder for a gloss paint having a gel structure is obtained.
