The process of the invention for the prepara- tion of a polymeric ion-exchange material with sulfonic acid groups consists in: a) grafting onto said material an ethylenically unsatu- rated monomer with a tertiary amine group, for example morpholinoethyl or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and b) reacting sodium sulfite with the grafted material. Depending on the operating conditions, the material obtained contains sulfonic acid groups by themselves or in association with tertiary amine groups, the latter case being that of a mixed exchan- ger.
