Abstract of the Disclosure A prepolymer amide is produced from a C12-amino- carboxylic acid lactam by hydrolytic polymerization at a steam pressure in the range from 30 to 180 bar, at a temperature in the range from 240 to 360°C and at a water content, in the lactam/- water mixture, in the range from 7.5 to 30 percent by weight. The process is economically advantageous, particularly because the reaction time can be substantially reduced.
