Process for the preparation of acetoacetylarylamides and -heteroarylamides of deactivated aromatics and hetero-aromatics, in which 1 mole of an amine of the formula Image in which X and Y each denote CH or one of the two ring members X and Y represents a nitrogen atom, R denotes a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl, .beta.-hydroxyethyl, benzyl or optionally substituted phenyl group and A denotes a fused-on benzene ring, the isocyclic or hetero-cyclic 6-membered ring being substituted by 1 or 2 further substituents and it being possible for the benzene ring A to be substituted by 1 to 3 substituents, is reacted with 1 to 1.2 moles of diketene at temperatures of 20 to 100°C, in glacial acetic acid in the presence of 1 to 20 mol per cent of a basic catalyst, such as tertiary amine, fluoride, acetate, trifluoromethanesulfonate, trifluoroacetate, benzoate, o-, m- and p-alkylC1-C4-benzoate, o-, m- and p-alkoxyC1-C4benzoate or o-, m- and p-di(alkylC1-C4amino)-benzoate, based on the amine, the substituent Image being converted into the Image group.
