Alkaline earth metal alcoholates having a spherical particle habitus are prepared by dissolving an alkaline earth metal alcoholate in a solvent, adding a second solvent which dissolves the alkaline earth metal alcoholates only with difficulty, or does not dissolve them, but which is homogeneously miscible with the solution of the alkaline earth metal alcoholate in the first solvent, then by removing the first solvent and separating the precipitated alcoholate. The particle size can be controlled by means of the shear gradient during the precipitation or by the use of emulsion stabilisers. The emulsion stabilisation leads to particles in the size range 0.5 to 20 µm with a particularly narrow particle size distribution. The alkaline earth metal alcoholates particles so prepared, in particular magnesium alcoholates particles, are useful as an active catalyst support material in polyolefin synthesis. Since particle morphology and size distribution of particles prepared by the process of the invention are superior compared with the prior art, this has a favourable effect on the properties of the produced polymer powder, such as a narrower particle size distribution and a smoother surface structure.
