Process for the preparation of alkanediols having at least two carbon atoms separating the alcohol groups, which comprises the reaction of a) an alkynediol and/or an alkenediol, of which the alcohol groups are separated by at least two carbon atoms linked by the alkynic or alkenic bond respectively, and b) hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst composition based upon a compound of cationic palladium, a co-ordinating anion and a bidentate ligand of the general formula R1R2-M-R-M-R3R4, wherein M represents phosphorus, arsenic or antimony, R is a bivalent organic bridging group containing from two to four carbon atoms in the bridge and R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent hydrocarbyl groups which may or may not be substituted with polar groups.
