23443-498 ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of C8-C24-alkyl poly- glycosides from saccharides and alcohols is disclosed. The process comprises a step of glycosylation of a saccharide with a short-chain alcohol having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, followed by a step of transglycosylation of the alkyl glycosides so obtained with long-chain alcohols containing 8 to 24 carbon atoms. The process according to the invention is carried out in the presence of phosphorus-containing mineral acids, their alkali metal salts or their alkaline earth metal salts. Compared with similar products known in the prior art, the products prepared according to the process of the invention have improved colour and water miscibility. They are useful as surface-active agents, particularly for cosmetic applications.
