Abstract of the Disclosure Alkyloligoglycosides having at least 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl (for example layryloligoglucoside) are produced by acid- catalyzed alcoholysis of lower-alkylglycosides or lower-alkyl- oligoglycosides. The alcohols have at least 3 carbon atoms more than the carbon atoms in the starting alkylglycosides or -oligoglycosides. The acid catalyst is typically sulfuric acid and its amount can be appropriately adjusted so that the resulting alkyloligoglycosides have a desired degree of oligomerization. The produced alkyloligoglycosides may be used as surfactants, lubricants, dye adjuvants, humectants or polyols for producing polyurethanes, etc.
