This invention pertains to a process for making .alpha.-methylenelactones and .alpha.-substitued hydrocarbylidene lactones. The present invention obtains high yields of .alpha.-methylene-.gamma.-butyrolactone by heating .gamma.- butyrolactone and formaldehyde in the presence of a base.
