A process for the preparation of .alpha.,.omega.-diamines from .alpha.,.omega.-dialdehydes wherein an .alpha.,.omega.-dialdehyde is reacted with a primary amine in the presence of water and the resulting reaction mixture is treated with excess ammonia and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
