ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the preparation of an ethylenically unsaturated ester, which process comprises reacting at least one of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid with a hydroxy compound having at least one primary hydroxyl group in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst and a water-immiscible organic solvent, the improvement which comprises adding at conclusion of the esterification reaction a lithium compound to the esterification mixture, which is subsequently subjected to distillation.
