23443-414 ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of aqueous, radiation- curable urethane-acrylate dispersions is disclosed. According to the process, isophorone diisocyanate is initially reacted with hydroxyacrylates at 25 to 50°C in a ratio of equivalents of NCO to OH of 3:1 to 5:1 with the formation of NCO-containing urethane- acrylates. The mixture is further reacted with COOH-containing ester polyols, made from polyols and dicarboxylic anhydrides, in the absence of solvents at 50 to 100°C with the formation of substantially NCO-free, COOH-containing urethane-acrylates. The mixture is subsequently emulsified at 90 to 95°C using aqueous solutions of bases. The process does not use an organic solvent and is free from side reactions.
