L'invention concerne la production d'aldéhydes aromatiques par oxydation par l'oxygène, d'un dérivé de para-crésol dans un solvant, en présence d'une base et d'une quantité catalytique d'un composé du cobalt. Selon le procédé, le catalyseur est un complexe chélaté du cobalt de structure rigide peu oxydable, représenté par le bis-(4-méthylpyridine- isoindolinato) cobalt (II) acétate, le phtalocyaninato-cobalt (II) ou le sulfophtalocyaninato-cobalt (II).
