ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aromatic carbonates having the general formula: Image (I) wherein R is an alkyl, alkoxy, aryl or aryloxy radical or a nitro group and R1 is an alkyl group or a radical of the formula: Image in which R has the aforesaid meaning, are prepared by reacting corresponding phenols or aryl esters thereof with alkyl, cyclic or aryl-alkyl carbonates, in the presence of a catalyst. The aromatic carbonates of formula (I) serve as intermediates in the production of aromatic polycarbonates and in the synthesis of various isocyanates.
