Abstract A process is described for the preparation of calcium cyanamide by nitrification of calcium carbide, which comprises introducing the ground carbide material, composed of calcium carbide to which, if appropriate, calcium cyanamide and/or calcium fluoride have been add- ed, into the furnace in a densified form. In this manner the caking on the rotary furnace wall which takes place in the course of nitrification is prevented and the nitrification yield is increased.
