The invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of chlorinated carboxylic acid esters of formula I Image (I) wherein R1 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl and R2 is hydrogen, alkyl or cycloalkyl, which process comprises reacting an acylal of formula II Image (II) with thionyl chloride.
