A B S T R A C T Chlorinated derivatives of benzoxazolone are prepared by a process involving the chlorination of benzoxazolone in the presence of water and dioxan. The new process is particularly applicable to the preparation of 6-chlorobenzoxazolone and 3-hydroxy- methyl-6-chlorobenzoxazolone of the formula: Image (wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxymethyl group) into which the former compound may readily be converted by hydroxymethylation. The compounds are useful for the production of the known insecticide 'phosalone'.
