ABSTRACT 326,057. There is provided an improved process for the preparation of chromone-2-carboxylic acids which comprises reacting 2'-hydroxy-2-alkylsulphinylacetophenones, provided that the alkyl moieties thereof have no free hydrogen atoms on the .beta.-carbon atom (where present), or 2'-hydroxy-2-phenyl- sulphinylacetophenones with glyoxylic acid in the presence of a base.
