ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a process for the preparation of coal for burning in a furnace using coal dust burners, wherein the coal is transported by pipeline from a distant deposit in the form of an aqueous coal suspension, the improvement comprises: pulverizing the coal for the suspension to a maximum particle size of 500 µm the maximum particle size being dictated by tile requirement that the particles be completely burned at a predetermined flame length; reducing, prior to pipeline transfer, the viscosity of the suspension produced from the coal by the addition of at least one additive to a value below 1000 cp, the suspension having a solid particle component of at least 60%; and converting the suspension adjacent said furnace, without preliminary partial separation of the fluid phase, into coal dust having the same particle size distribution as that in the suspension. This novel process eliminates the costly and complicated conventional waste water treatment and the associated environmental problems and also permits the use of traditional coal dust burners.
