A copolymerization process for copolymerising carbon monoxide and an olefin employs a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal, for example palladium, and a bidentate ligand having general formula R1R2M1—R—M2R3R4 where R represents a bridging group, M1 and R2 represent nitrogen, arsenic, antimony or, preferably phosphorus, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 preferably represent phenyl groups each having an alkoxy substituent and a sulphonyl substituent -SO2-OH or a salt or ester derivative. Such catalysts afford good reaction rates and good recycling properties.
