ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A crosslinked copolymer useful In textile printing is prepared by a) polymerizing in the presence of a radical initiator in a water-miscible alkanol k mole percent acrylamide with 0 to 45 mole percent of h compound of the formula Image and 0.1 to 20 mole percent of a crosslinking agent wherein k is 99.9 to 50, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that only one of R2 and R3 may be simultaneously methyl, and I is a member selected from the group consisting of cyano, alkoxy carbonyl having a total of 1 to 9 carbon atoms, alkoxy carbonyl with hydroxy sudsututed alkoxy moiety having 2 to 8 carbon atoms in the hydroxy substituted alkoxy; alkanoyloxy having a total of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, alkanoylamlno havln~ a totnl Or 2 to 8 carbon atom , cycllc alkanoylamlno havlng a total or 4 to 8 carbon toms, phenyl and trlalkoxy~llyl bavlng 1 to 2 carbon atom~ ln tbe alkoxr; b) mlxlng tbo polymer trom a) vltb p mole percont ot a hydroxldo ot tbe to~ no~ vhoroln p 18 5 to k and H ls an alkall r~tal; and c) saponlrylng the polymer mlxture trom b) at 30 to lS0°C untll p mole percont Or ~.~tde moletiea are saponltled to -COOt~; d) removln~ by-product ammonla; and optlonally e) methylolatlng the saponl~led polymer ln a lo~er slkanol wlth 0 to (k-p) mole percent paraformnldehyde at A temperature of 10°C. to tbe bolling polnt of sald lower alkanol.
