A B S T R A C T A process for the preparation of 2-halocyclobutanones or 2-halocyclobutenones by reacting a 2-haloacylhalide in an inert aprotic polar solvent with an ethylenically unsaturated compound or an alkyne at a temperature above 5°C in the presence of zinc and/or tin. The compounds which are prererably prepared in diisobutylketone are precursors or cyclopropane carboxylic acids.
