Substantially pure diacetylrhein is obtained by subjecting diacetylrhein containing aloe-emodin derivatives to a liquid-liquid partitioning between an organic phase containing a polar organic solvent which is only partly miscible with water and an aqueous phase having a pH of 6.5 to 7.5, recovering the diacetylrhein from the aqueous phase and, optionally recrystallising same. The diacetylrhein thus obtained contains less than 20 ppm of aloe-emodin derivatives and can be used as an active ingredient in pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of arthritic diseases.
