ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE What are disclosed are methods for making a carbonic acid ester of the formula Image by reacting carbon monoxide, oxygen, and an alcohol, ROH, in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a metal carboxylate salt of the formula Image and of a mixture of a cupric or cuprous halide or carboxylate with a palladium salt of the formulas PdX2 or M'2PdX4, where M' is a metal cation and X is halide or carboxylate.
