The present invention relates to a process for the prepara- tion of ether-sulphonates of high purity, substantially free from extraneous salts, of the general formula I R1-[O-(CR2R2'-CR3R3')x]y-OCR4R4'CR5R5'SO3M I in which R2 to R5, R2' to R5', M, x and y are defined as given in Claim 1 by reacting a compound of the general formula II R1-[O-(CR2R2'-CR3R3')x]y-OH II with a compound of the general formula III HO-CR4R4'CR5R5'-SO3M III in the presence of a compound of the general formula IV MOH IV followed by neutralization of the compound of the general formula IV with an acid, characterized in that the acid employed is a compound of the general formula V R1-[O-(CR2R2'-CR3R3')x]y-OCR4R4'CR5R5'SO3H V V
