A process for the preparation of glycosides by enzymatic glycosylation with .alpha.- and .beta.-giycosidases from holotrichous ciliates and, in particular, from Hymenostomatida, is described. Glycosidases from holotrichous ciiiates are suitable for the enzymatic synthesis of alkyl glycosides, glycopeptides, and di- or oligosaccharides. Preferred glycosyl donors are nitrophenyl glycosides, glycosyl fluorides or disaccharices, while preferred acceptors are short- chain alcohols, polyhydroxy compounds, in particular monosaccharides, or protected hydroxyamino acids or corresponding peptides.
