A B S T R A C T The invention relates to a process for the prepa- ration of halogeno-mercuri-aldehydes and -ketones. According to the invention, an alkenyl ester is reacted with a mercuric halide in the presence of water and, preferably, of an acid acceptor. The reaction, which is preferably carried out at between 15 and 35°C, makes it possi- ble to obtain very pure products with excellent yields, especially when mercuric oxide is used as the acid acceptor. The novel process is useful for the manufacture of intermediates for the synthesis of alkenyl esters and chloro- formates.
