A b s t r a c t This invention relates to a process for preparing a high molecular weight polyarylene sulphide which comprises reacting: a. 50 - 100 mol-% of a dihalogenated aromatic compound corresponding to the formula Image (I) and 0 - 50 mol-% of a dihalogenated aromatic compound corresponding to the formula Image (II) wherein X stands for halogens in the meta- or para-position to one another and R1 may be identical or different and may stand for hydrogen, C1-C4-alkyl, C5-C10-cycloalkyl, C6-C10-aryl, C7-C14- alkylaryl or C7-C14-arylalkyl or two groups R1 in the ortho- position to one another may be linked together to form an aromatic or heterocyclic ring containing up to 3 hetero atoms such as N, O or S, and one of the groups R1 is invariably different from hydrogen, and b. 0 - 0.5 mol-%, based on the sum of dihalogenated aromatic compounds corresponding to formulae I and II, of a tri- or tetrahalogenated aromatic compound corresponding to the formula ArXn (III) wherein Ar stands for an aromatic or heterocyclic group, X stands for a halogen, and N represents the number 3 or 4, and c. an alkali metal sulphide or a mixture of alkali metal sulphides, components a, b and c being used in such proportions that the molar ratio (a + b) : c lies within the range of from 0.75 : 1 to 1.05 : 1, in d. an organic solvent, and f. elementary sulphur in quantities of from 0.1 to 1.5% by weight, based on the polyarylene sulphide resulting, in a melt at a temperature of from 300°C to 390°C. The polyarylene sulphide products are particularly suitable for coating moulded articles.
