La calcination de la diatomite est effectuée au sein d'une veine gazeuse spiralants à haute température, dans laquelle un anneau de billes réfractaires reste en sustentation, anneau au sein duquel s'opère la calcination et l'agglomération contrôlée des particules diatomitiques. La structure amorphe de la silice est conservée: on obtient ainsi des agents de filtration très perméables pratiquement exempts de oristobalite.
